Red Girl

A rarity for me, using one color! For this drawing, I was playing with the different tones I can get from a Crayola-type marker. After a little while they start drying out, which I don't like. The texture starts getting grainy and soft.

Warrior

I'm not sure what my inspiration was on this one, but I'm happy with the results. I rarely draw male figures, it was nice being able to pull of such a manly man.

Mastershake

This is what happens when it's super late at night and I'm doodling while watching TV.

Cool Cat

A quick little doodle inspired by 80s men's fashion. And a lion.

Skull Doodles

Someone asked me for drawings of skulls for tattoo ideas. This was a random page I made. I dare someone to get the pink one.

Shampoo Commercial

I did this in 5 minutes using a borrowed pen. I'm not thrilled with it, but can't complain for how fast I did it.

Two-Toned

I absolutely love using bold colors. This is my first trying to use the style I've created with the markers with two different tones - warm on one side, cool on the other. The photo I used showed the woman sitting next to a fireplace and my drawing does not do justice to the colors that were thrown around in the original picture.

Woman

Let me tell you a secret... This is supposed to be Brittany Spears. I know, I know, she doesn't look anything like she's supposed to. I flubbed up the nose and eyes and then decided to make her into a different person. Other than that, I can't complain with how this turned out.

Sniper's Wife

Not entirely happy with this one, her nose is quite off and her eyes just don't look quite right. However, I'm still satisfied with how I'm coming along doing realistic portraits.

Sugar Skull Lady in Green

Trying my hand at a willowy fantasy character. My green markers are all dying on me, so the texture is really grainy, but I'm still happy with the effect. If anyone has tips for making markers last longer, I'm all ears!

Taylor Swift

I will admit that I'm a fan of Taylor Swift, especially after the year she's had! I'm really proud of how this portrait turned out, you can actually tell who it is! And, when I posted it to my Facebook page for my family and friends, it actually recognized there was a face in there! To me, that's proof that I got the proportions right!

Doodle of Robot Turtle

A quick little doodle!

Tulips

Here in beautiful Western New York, we're deep in the throws of winter. So, naturally I'm dreaming of spring! I may refine this sketch for a tattoo design.

Veep (Julia Dreyfus)

I don't actually watch the show, Veep, but I love how expressive Julia Dreyfus is and found this picture in a tabloid. I couldn't resist sketching it out. It's not perfect, but I think I captured the look on her face rather well.

Victorian Madam

A quick doodle of a prim and proper Victorian lady. Another subject I seem to be drawn to. I'm mostly happy with her bun. I know it's silly, but I love how that turned out and wish I had carried it out throughout the doodle. But, that's why it's a doodle, I guess.

Just started my Tumblr page! You can check it out by following me at karastorey.tumblr.com !

Vietnam

I did this one on my lunch break at work. It's from an old photograph of the Vietnam war. I'm experimenting more with using simple color palettes and contrasting shading. I'm very proud of this one.

Violin Player

I must admit, I'm extremely proud of how this turned out! My goal was to do a simple exorcise using three colors, white (background), blue and black. I used a photo I found online of a little girl from the 1930s playing the violin. The photograph was black and white with a lot of contrast, perfect for this type of exorcise. I used a blue highlighter and a black marker.

Thursday, January 15, 2015

I'm not sure what inspires this look, but I find myself drawing this girl over and over again. For this one, again, I had no model. I was mostly looking at shading the top of her head. Her nose kind of looks like a pig, but overall I'm very happy with the shading.

Woman Dancing

A study of movement and color using colored pencil. I didn't have a model for this sketch, so the shading and the position of the legs is a bit off, but I feel that it's still a strong piece. I was mainly focused on the folds of her skirt and the shading of her neck and head. Again, lots and lots of color.

Knees

A rough sketch that, I believe, exemplifies the idea that less is more. Sometimes, I can be pretty heavy handed, especially with color. I may expand on this and do something in ink/marker. For this, I used colored pencils.

Braided Woman

I absolutely adore drawing hair! I love giving the strands depth and shine. For this piece, I used a pen.
